We’ve shared plenty of things we wish we’d done differently in our home… but what about the things we’d absolutely repeat in a heartbeat? After living here for a while, there are a few design decisions that have proven themselves time and time again — the kind that make daily life just work better. Here are the things we’d 100% do again if we ever built another home!
Two Washers and Dryers
If you have the space (and the laundry loads to match), this is one of those features that feels like a luxury but functions like a sanity-saver. We can run bedding and clothes at the same time, or divide loads between family members. It’s especially handy when guests are staying over or during those endless laundry days.
Pot Filler Above the Range
It’s small, it’s simple, but it’s one of those everyday conveniences that makes you wonder how you ever lived without it. No more lugging heavy pots of water from the sink to the stove — and it just looks so good as a design detail.
Powder Bath Down the Hallway
This might sound minor, but trust us — having the powder bath tucked down a hallway (instead of right off the kitchen or main living area) is chef’s kiss. It gives guests privacy and keeps noise (and awkward eye contact) out of sight and out of mind.
Two Sets of Stairs to the Upper Level
We have one main staircase and one that leads directly to the MIL suite, and it’s been a total game-changer. Whether it’s for guests, older kids, or future flexibility, having a second staircase makes the home flow so much better — and gives everyone their own sense of space.
MIL Suite (Mother-in-Law Suite)
Speaking of the MIL suite — it’s hands-down one of our favorite parts of the house. Having a separate living space with a bedroom, bathroom, and a little kitchenette has come in handy more times than we can count. It’s perfect for guests, grandparents, or even future resale value.
Steam Shower
If you’ve ever experienced one, you already know. A steam shower feels like a mini spa at home — great for relaxation, muscle recovery, and just adding a little luxury to everyday life. Definitely one of those upgrades that’s worth it.
Ultra-Quiet Bathroom Fans
This one’s easy to overlook during planning, but wow, does it make a difference. No loud humming or buzzing — just quiet, efficient ventilation that keeps bathrooms fresh without the noise. It’s a small detail that feels surprisingly high-end.
Wirsbo In-Floor Heat in Basement Tile Areas
Every time we walk barefoot across the basement tile, we’re reminded why we did this. It makes those spaces so much more comfortable year-round. If we built again, we’d probably take it a step further and run Wirsbo heat throughout the entire basement.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that everyday comfort matters most. The things that simplify routines, improve flow, or just make your home feel a little cozier — those are always the upgrades that age well.
