Do you have a mudroom in your home? Or are you remodeling or building and including one? Not everyone has one, but they are more and more popular and very functional! Today, we’re covering how to choose the perfect flooring. There is more to it than meets the eye! Plus, we have some tips for what to avoid. Read for more!
Material
By far the best options for mudroom floor material are tile or LVP/LVT. You want to choose a floor that is waterproof as opposed to regular hardwood flooring that is prone to water damage. If you like the look of hardwood flooring, laminated vinyl planks (LVP) are designed to look like wood planks but have the waterproof quality. Similar to LVP, laminated vinyl tile (LVT) mimics the look of tile and is also waterproof. Or you could also go with our trusty ol’ friend tile that comes in so many subtle or fun options! Go big or go home in your mudroom, right?

Color
While color is entirely up to you, we do recommend sticking to a medium tone because it hides dirt and dust well. If you clean your floors everyday, go ahead with white floors! But, don’t say we didn’t warn you! Using a pattern on the floor is another great option, as it also hides the dirt. Avoid dark floors if you live in a state that has snow, since they will show the salt that you track in from your shoes. PSA- don’t forget that tiles can be configured in a multitude of ways to create fun patterns! For example, herringbone works great with long skinny tiles or create a unique pattern with a basic rectangle!

Finish
If it’s between a matte, polished, or glossy floor finish, we really advise you stick to matte! Polished and glossy mudroom floors are prone to becoming slippery when wet, which can be dangerous with little kiddos running in and out. Something else to keep in mind if you go the tile route is grout. Grout can be hard to keep clean, so try to use larger tiles that require less grout throughout the floor.

There you have it! Some tips to have in your back pocket when you are choosing the right mudroom floor for your home! In short, the most functional flooring is waterproof, matte, medium color, but like we described above, there are multiple options within those to find something you like the best!
