Would you believe us if we said there was an art to decorating your Christmas tree? With a few helpful product suggestions and styling tips, we’re showing you guys how you can elevate your Christmas tree and the decorating experience. While we’ve never seen an ugly tree (because that’s simply not possible), these simple tips and tricks are bound to create the perfect focal point in your home this holiday season. Let’s get decorating!
Step 1: Set the Scene
Let’s set the stage for your Christmas tree trimming experience! Whether you opt for a faux tree or a real one, we recommend starting by fluffing the branches and creating as much dimension as possible to fill your space; textural branches make all the difference. Next, we like the set the scene for our vision by selecting a tree skirt or collar. The main difference between the two is that tree collars offer more coverage than tree skirts, and are commonly made of metal, wood, or natural fibers. Step 2: Add Garland + Lights
We recommend adding your lights first, so the wire of the lights can be disguised with garland or by ornaments. Use one string of lights (100 lights) for each foot of height of your tree, and push the lights far back into the tree to add depth. After adding lights, we like to add garland to bring in some color and texture. Don’t be afraid to layer in multiple types of garlands to create dimension! We love using a variety of chunky and thin beads, frayed ribbons, and fun garlands add texture to our tree. Shop the garland(s) we’ve been eyeing below:
Step 3: Add Your Ornament Base
This next step is where the fun really starts! Invest in solid globe ornaments and pair them with themed collections for easy decorating (stick to a color palette of 2-4 colors). Carrying something consistent throughout the tree makes it easier to layer your favorite pieces with more personality on top. We call this creating your ornament base and setting the foundation for unique and personalized ornaments. Use around 15 ornaments for each foot of height of your tree (if your tree is more than 9′ tall, use more).
Step 4: Layer in Unique Shapes, Textures, and Personalization
Now it’s time to add your signature touch to your tree by layering in pieces that bring personality to your tree! Your layered pieces could be anything from sentimental pieces made by your kids to one-of-a-kind detailed ornaments. Make sure to place them at different depths on the tree, not just the surface (start with large ornaments and work down to smaller ones). We also recommend adding in stems (real or faux) to add further texture. Have fun with this step and play with mix-matching colors, textures, shapes, and more.
Step 5: Top if Off With a Star
Complete your final look with a shining star or a graceful angel tree topper! Shop our favorites below:
