Choosing a paint color gets all the glory. Choosing the right sheen is the quiet decision that determines how your walls actually live. So you can think of sheen as the personality layer. It affects durability, clean-ability, and even how forgiving your walls will be on a Tuesday when life gets chaotic. Here is how to choose wisely, room by room.

What is Sheen?
Sheen refers to how much light a paint reflects. The more sheen, the more durable and wipeable the surface tends to be. The tradeoff? More sheen also highlights imperfections.
- Flat: no shine, ultra-forgiving
- Matte: very low sheen, soft finish
- Satin: subtle glow, more durable
- (Higher gloss finishes exist, but we’re focusing on the most common picks.)
Now let’s talk specifics.

Walls
For most living spaces, matte or satin is the go-to. Matte is perfect for hiding drywall imperfections and is the easiest to touch up later. However, if you have kids, pets, or high-traffic hallways, you may lean toward satin instead. Satin offers more durability and is easier to wipe clean without leaving visible burnish marks.
We recommend:
- Living rooms, bedrooms, offices → Matte
- Hallways, playrooms, high-traffic areas → Satin

Cabinets
Cabinetry lives a harder life than walls such as grease, fingerprints, and constant handling. Because of this we lean towards satin. Satin is easier to clean and more moisture resistant. However, some homeowners love a matte cabinet finish for its velvety look. But just know this: it may show wear faster in kitchens or bathrooms.
We recommend:
- Kitchen and bathroom cabinets → Satin for durability
- Lower-traffic built-ins → Matte can work if you love the look

Ceilings
Ceilings should quietly disappear so we use flat paint. It minimizes light reflection and creates the smooth, even appearance you want. Anything shinier on a ceiling tends to highlight every drywall flaw and patch.
Trim
Trim takes abuse. Think shoes, vacuums, dogs, and backpacks. So, go with a satin finish on the trim. Satin is durable, easy to wipe clean, and holds up to repeated cleaning. It gives just enough definition without veering into glossy territory.

What’s the Most Durable Sheen?
Between matte and satin, satin is more durable because it is better at resisting moisture and handling some scrubbing. However, matte wins when it comes to touch ups. It blends more seamlessly if you need to patch a spot later.
What’s Best Paint in a Bathroom?
Bathrooms introduce humidity, water splashes, and frequent cleaning. If it’s a powder bath with minimal moisture, matte walls can work beautifully. But in full bathrooms with showers, satin is typically the safer, longer-lasting choice. Moisture and matte are not close friends!

Sheen shapes how your home looks, wears, and feels over time. Matte gives you softness and easy touch-ups. Satin brings durability and washability. Flat keeps ceilings calm and quiet. The right sheen makes your paint job feel intentional, not accidental!
