Designing a kitchen island involves more than just choosing a style; it’s about creating a functional centerpiece that enhances the overall flow and usability of your kitchen. A well-designed island can serve multiple purposes, from providing additional counter space and storage to offering a convenient area for seating and socializing. By carefully considering factors such as clearance distances, cabinet depth, and seating arrangements, you can ensure that your island not only complements your kitchen’s aesthetic but also meets your practical needs! What Are Kitchen Island Styles?
Turned Legs on Island
Turned legs on a kitchen island are a fantastic way to infuse charming character into any design! While they might remind you of the 90s when they were popular for stair posts and other features, they’re making a stylish comeback with a more sophisticated twist.. no pun intended HA.
Solid End Panels on Island
Solid end panels extend the island’s profile all the way to the edge of the countertop overhang, creating a cozy nook for stools, as shown in the image above. This often-overlooked detail can add a distinctive touch to your island design, setting yours apart from the rest of the pack!
Arched Panels on Island
Arches are a sophisticated detail that, when used thoughtfully, can create a standout feature in your home. Although it might seem like a subtle element to add arched panels on your island, it likely will be the first thing someone notices on your island because it is so unique and cute!
Single Sided Overhang Island
Something else to think of when designing an island is where seating will go, which is very dependent on the layout of your kitchen/home. In the kitchen above we just finished in Orono, MN, we opted for a single sided overhang island so that conversation could flow nicely with the people in the dining room as well! This layout encourages a more open and interactive space between two adjacent rooms.
Double Sided Overhang Island
Another option for island seating is a double sided overhang on the island like in the image above. This layout directs better conversation for the guests within the kitchen and at the island, which is perfect for the folks who entertain often and hang out around the island!
Table Island
A less costly version of a regular built-in kitchen island is the option of a table island. This is furniture that can be moved around easily if that is an important feature you value. We often opt for a table island in basements with bars because it allows for more flexibility with the space as needs change over the years!
Reeded Island
A reeded style island might not be your vibe, but you can’t disagree that Jessica knocked it out of the park in the kitchen design above! The reeded detail around the whole island cabinet adds so much character and definition to the space and definitely creates a statement piece worth showcasing!
Open Island
An open island design is perfect for those who love to showcase their decor styling skills! With shelves below the countertop, you can add a stylish basket, bowl, or bin of your choice, creating a personalized and attractive focal point. The island featured above is a perfect example of how an open design can turn the island into the centerpiece of the room, drawing admiration and enhancing the overall aesthetic.
Waterfall Island
Waterfall islands are NOT out of style! While we aren’t doing them in every home we are building or remodeling, they still make an appearance like in the project above. This is one of our favorite kitchen designs we’ve done and it definitely has something to do with the island. The kitchen is proof that you don’t have to have an ultra modern house to do a waterfall island!
What Are Features to Include in a Kitchen Island?
Pull-out Trash
Pull-out trash drawers are one of our favorite kitchen innovations. After all, who really wants a trash can on display or dealing with unpleasant odors? While placing trash under the sink is an option, pull-out drawers address this very issue by providing a sleek, convenient solution. The ease of simply opening a drawer to discard waste is a feature I never want to be without!
Drawers
Including drawers in your island is absolutely a must! Incorporating drawers into a kitchen island offers both functional and aesthetic benefits, making them a smart design choice. Drawers provide accessible and organized storage for utensils, cookware, and other essentials, keeping frequently used items within easy reach and reducing countertop clutter.
Hidden Cabinets
Make the most of your island space by incorporating storage cabinets on the back rather than opting for extra-deep front cabinets that are hard to access or leaving the space unused. Or consider adding a hidden storage option like a long cabinet accessible from the side of the island. This setup is perfect for sliding in and out items like a folding table, ensuring every inch of your island serves a practical purpose and contributes to a well-organized kitchen.
Hidden Paper Towel Holder
Am I the only one who dislikes seeing paper towels cluttering up the countertops? If you share that sentiment, here’s a handy tip: hide your paper towels in a built-in space within the island. This keeps them out of sight but still easily accessible, blending practicality with a cleaner look. It’s a simple yet effective way to maintain a tidy countertop while ensuring your paper towels are always within reach!
What Are the Ideal Clearance Distances for a Kitchen Island?
What should the clearance be between the back of the island and perimeter cabinets?
At the very least, aim for at least 36″ of clearance around your kitchen island. Ideally, a distance of 42″-48″ provides ample space for comfortable movement, especially if multiple cooks are working in the kitchen.
What is the ideal clearance between kitchen island cabinets and appliances?
If you have appliances like a fridge, dishwasher, or oven that swing into the space around the island, it’s advised to allow at least 42″ of clearance. This ensures that doors and drawers don’t collide when opened, maintaining smooth and convenient access to all kitchen features.
How big should a kitchen island be?
For a kitchen island, aim for a base cabinet depth of 24″-36″. If you’re including seating, add an additional 12″-18″ of overhang where the seats will be. The length of the island depends on your available space, but we recommend a minimum of 48″ in length. For seating, plan for one seat every 24″. For instance, an island designed for four people with a single-sided overhang should be about 96″ long.
Incorporating a thoughtfully designed island into your kitchen can transform the space into a more efficient and inviting area for cooking, dining, and entertaining. By paying attention to details like clearance, cabinet dimensions, and seating capacity, you can optimize both functionality and style. Ultimately, a well-designed island will not only enhance the visual appeal of your kitchen but also provide a versatile and practical solution that adapts to your lifestyle.
