Choosing cabinet hardware doesn’t seem like a hard task… that is until you have to decide what size pull you need. Between drawers and doors and whether they are short or long, it’s a mathematical mystery on exactly how to determine the “right” size. A lot of it comes down to your eye, but don’t fret, we have some general rules you can follow to get a feel for it.
Drawers Under 24 in.
For drawers less than 24 inches wide the rule is as simple as it gets. Pulls should be about 1/3 the width of the drawer. For example, if you have a 21 inch drawer, you would use a 7 inch pull!
Drawers Over 24 in.
If a drawer is wider than 24 inches, you will want two pulls. Each pull should be about 1/6 the size of the drawer width. So if you have a 36 inch drawer, then you would want two 6 inch pulls spaced out on the drawer front.
Regular Cabinet Doors
Don’t worry, regular sized cabinet doors also follow a very simple rule! Generally we choose 5 inch pulls for both upper and lower cabinets.. that’s it! Phew, that was easy.
Tall Cabinet Doors
Tall cabinet doors is where the lines are blurry. We tend to select anywhere from 8-12 inch cabinet pulls depending on how tall the door is. If it is a full height door, definitely choose at least a 12 inch pull. For doors that are not full height, you might want to opt for an 8 or 10 inch pull.
These are general rules that we tend to use when selecting the pull size for cabinet and drawer hardware. A lot of it does come down to what looks right, especially for taller cabinet doors, but typically we stick to this for a guide.
