For many homeowners, a garage becomes a place where everything lands, from tools and sports equipment to seasonal storage and extra appliances. However, your garage can be more than a place to park cars. It can function as a workspace, storage, or even a pet care area. If you’re building or remodeling, these garage features can make the space both functional and enjoyable to use.

Garage Storage Solutions
One of the most important things to plan for in a garage is storage. Without the right systems in place, life can quickly take over. Slat walls are one of our favorite storage options. We love wall-mounted systems because they let you to hang lots of items like bikes, sports gear, tools, boots, skis, scooters, and golf equipment. Because the hooks can be easily rearranged, they offer flexibility as your storage needs change over time!
Attic Access & Overhead Storage
Garages also have valuable overhead storage opportunities like extra space for seasonal storage. Pull-down attic stairs are a common option, but for heavier items, you can install an attic lift that can raise and lower storage bins safely. Planning this access early ensures the space is easy to use and structurally ready for storage.

Garage Workspaces
For people who enjoy projects, a garage can double as a workspace. Adding a workbench creates an area for home projects to all stay in one place. In this case, you should also think about installing a sink. Having a sink nearby makes it easy to wash hands, clean tools, or rinse off messy items without needing to go into your house.
Heating & Water
In colder climates, a heater can make a huge difference in how usable the space is year-round. Heated garages are especially helpful if you plan to use the space for projects, workouts, or vehicle maintenance. Even if you’re not ready to fully install a heater, it’s smart to rough in for one during construction so it can be added later if needed.
Another helpful feature is installing a water spigot. It lets you to wash your car indoors during colder months or rinse off muddy gear without going outside!

Floor Drains
Garage floors always get dirty, especially in climates with snow, salt, or mud. Including floor drains or trench drains makes cleanup much easier since they allow snow, water, or spills to drain rather than pooling on the floor.
Garage Size and Layout
The size and layout of a garage can have a major impact on how functional it is. While a standard depth is often around 24 feet, we typically recommend planning for at least 30 feet of depth when possible. This allows enough room to comfortably park larger SUVs or trucks while still leaving space to walk around or store additional items.
Adding a third or fourth stall is another popular upgrade. Extra stalls can be used for additional vehicles, storage, or even a designated workspace or hobby area. Some homeowners also include a mini overhead door specifically for smaller vehicles such as golf carts, ATVs, or four-wheelers. This allows easy access without needing to open the main overhead door.

Garage Finishes
Another decision is whether to finish the garage or leave it unfinished. A finished garage typically includes drywall and taped walls, painted surfaces, a finished ceiling, and upgraded flooring such as epoxy-coated concrete. Epoxy floors are especially great because they are durable, easy to clean, and resistant to stains from oil or chemicals!
Leaving the it unfinished can save money upfront, but finishing the space often makes it feel cleaner, brighter, and more functional in the long run.

Garage Doors & Windows
The number and type of doors in your garage can also impact function. A service door that leads directly outside is a simple feature that can be incredibly convenient since it provides quick access to the yard without needing to open an overhead door.
Windows are another detail to consider. They bring natural light in, making the space feel brighter and more welcoming. However, it’s important to consider privacy when placing windows, especially if it faces a street or neighbors.

Pet-Friendly Garage Features
For pet owners, the garage can be a great place to incorporate a few practical pet features. One option is to include a dog wash station, so it is easy to rinse off muddy paws before they enter the house! An automatic collar-sensing dog door is another smart feature that allows your dog to enter through it while keeping other animals out.

Designing a Garage That Works for You
A garage should be designed to support how you actually live. Whether it’s storing sports equipment, tackling weekend projects, caring for pets, or simply keeping vehicles protected, the right features can make a huge difference!
