welcome home

Tired of walking into a messy mudroom or entryway? Shoes piled on the floor, coats draped everywhere, backpacks tossed in corners. If that sounds familiar, your mudroom might simply be missing a few key design features.

A well-designed mudroom acts as the command center of your home. It’s where daily routines start and end, where clutter gets contained, and where organization makes everyday life smoother. With the right layout and features, your mudroom can go from chaotic to calm. Here are the mudroom design details and must-haves we always recommend when planning this hardworking space.

Start With Durable Flooring

Mudrooms experience some of the heaviest traffic in the house. Between muddy boots, snow-covered shoes, pet paws, and dripping coats, the flooring needs to handle a lot.

Tile is typically our top recommendation for mudrooms because it is extremely durable, waterproof, and easy to clean. It can handle dirt, moisture, and salt from winter boots without damage. Porcelain or ceramic tile are both great options that hold up well over time.

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is another option some homeowners consider because it is water resistant and comfortable underfoot. However, hardwood floors are generally not recommended for mudrooms since constant moisture, dirt, and heavy use can cause wear and damage much faster than in other areas of the home.

Choosing a flooring material that is both durable and easy to clean is one of the most important design decisions you can make for this space.

Designing the Right Locker System

Lockers are one of the most functional features in a mudroom. Instead of everyone piling their belongings in one place, lockers create designated spaces for each person in the household.

Some homeowners prefer open lockers, which make it easy to grab items quickly and keep things visible. Others prefer lockers with doors to hide clutter and create a cleaner look. Both styles can work well depending on the aesthetic and level of organization your family prefers.

A good mudroom design usually includes a locker for each family member. This ensures backpacks, coats, and daily items all have a designated spot. It’s also smart to plan a locker or storage area for pet supplies such as leashes, treats, and outdoor gear.

When thinking through locker design, consider where different items will go. Shoes can be stored in cubbies or drawers at the bottom, coats can hang on hooks or rods, and seasonal items can be stored in upper cabinets or baskets above the lockers.

The bench area is another design detail worth considering. Some homeowners choose a painted bench top that matches the cabinetry, while others prefer a wood bench for warmth and contrast. Both can work beautifully depending on the overall style of the space.

Planning the Right Locker Size

Sizing lockers properly makes a big difference in how functional they are. If lockers are too narrow, they become difficult to use and quickly feel cramped.

As a general guideline, we typically recommend planning about 15 inches of width per locker. This provides enough space for coats, backpacks, and everyday items without feeling crowded.

Of course, locker sizes can vary depending on the needs of your household. Families with sports equipment or bulkier gear may want slightly larger spaces.

Allow Enough Walkway Space

Mudrooms often become high-traffic zones, especially during busy mornings or when everyone is coming home at the same time. Without proper clearance, the space can quickly feel cramped and chaotic.

We typically recommend planning at least four feet of walkway space in front of lockers. This allows people to move comfortably through the room without bumping into each other while putting on shoes or grabbing coats.

This clearance also makes the room feel more open and functional instead of tight and crowded.

Features That Make a Mudroom Work Harder

Beyond lockers and flooring, there are several additional features that can make a mudroom even more functional.

Lockers are the foundation of most mudrooms, but adding a drop desk can turn the space into a small command center where mail, keys, and school papers can be sorted. Some homeowners also include a closet for additional coat storage or bulkier items that don’t fit in lockers.

Hooks are another simple but essential feature. They provide quick storage for coats, bags, and hats without needing to open cabinets or drawers.

In some homes, the mudroom also doubles as a laundry area. Including a washer and dryer in this space can be incredibly convenient, especially for quickly washing muddy clothes or sports gear.

Pet owners sometimes add a dog wash station, which makes it easy to rinse off muddy paws before pets enter the rest of the house.

Other helpful details include charging stations for devices, outlets inside lockers for backpacks or equipment that needs to charge, and plenty of electrical outlets for flexibility.

A Mudroom Designed for Real Life

A well-designed mudroom should make your daily routines easier, not harder. By planning for durable flooring, comfortable clearances, and storage that fits your family’s needs, you can create a space that keeps clutter contained and your home running smoothly.

When thoughtfully designed, the mudroom becomes more than just an entryway. It becomes the organized transition between the outside world and the comfort of home.
