welcome home

If there is one room in a custom home that works harder than the kitchen, it’s the mudroom. It’s the transition point between the chaos of the outside world and the peace of your home. But a truly functional mudroom is about more than just cabinetry… it’s about the measurements.

At Alma Homes, we have a specific set of standards that we use as a starting point for every mudroom we design. These dimensions ensure the space is durable, accessible, and high-performance. Whether you’re remodeling or building new, here is our 101 guide to mudroom locker design.

What are the ideal dimensions for mudroom lockers?

Prioritize Individual Space

To avoid the dreaded morning bottleneck, we recommend a minimum width of 15 inches per locker per person. This allows enough room for a bulky winter coat and a backpack to hang side-by-side without overlapping into the next person’s zone.

Hook Placement & Mounting

The height of your hooks matters! We place our hooks at least 4 feet above the bench or floor to ensure longer coats don’t bunch up at the bottom. Additionally, we always mount hooks onto an 8”-10” horizontal board or make sure there is blocking in the wall behind the cabinet. This provides extra structural support for heavy bags and creates a clean, intentional look.

The Perfect Bench

The mudroom bench takes a lot of abuse between grocery bags and heavy boots. We recommend a 1.5” bench thickness for a substantial, high-end feel. More importantly, we almost always specify a stain-grade wood bench rather than a painted finish. Stain is significantly more durable against scuffs and water, ensuring your mudroom looks beautiful for years to come.

How do you maximize storage and flow?

Smart Vertical Shelving

To keep shelving functional, we find that a distance of 12” to 16” between shelves is the “sweet spot” for most baskets and bins. If you’re including open cubbies above the lockers, keep them 14” high or less; anything taller usually requires an additional shelf to keep the space from becoming a black hole for lost items.

Don’t Forget the Walkway

It doesn’t matter how beautiful your lockers are if you can’t comfortably walk past them. We maintain at least 36 inches of walkway clearance in front of our lockers but always shoot for 48″ when possible. This allows someone to sit on the bench and put on shoes without completely blocking the path for others.

The Final Result

A mudroom designed with the right proportions is a game-changer for your home’s organization. By sticking to these technical standards, you ensure that your drop zone is as functional as it is beautiful.
